On Saturday 15th November 2014 we had the pleasure of welcoming Kate Green MP onto one of our culture tours. Organised by VSO’s Kate Turner and Sarah Challoner and guided by NOUSPR’s John Baptiste the day was a great success. We all say a big thank you to Vestine and her team of helpers.
I had the pleasure of spending the day with Vestine and members of her patient expert group, who welcomed us into her home and introduced us to her family. She guided us through a series of different activities, showing us the typical things she does every day in a rural Rwandan village. The highlight for me was the time we spent chatting and getting to know one another. I was very moved to hear of the mental health challenges that many of the group had experienced in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide and the mutual support they provided one another as they lived with a psycho-social disability. It was a fantastic day and I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who wanted to spend time with such an inspiring group of people and experience village life in Rwanda. I would also like to thank the National Organisation of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry in Rwanda for all their help in making the arrangements.
