On Wednesday 20th August we met with NOUSPR members from Vincent’s group. Their group is located near Nyamata just 80 minutes drive south of Kigali. We were there to hear their plans for generating income by providing tailoring and sewing services. Based within a community of 40,000 there should be plenty of customers! Initial target markets identified were uniforms for school children, basic tailoring and repairs.
Vincent explained that their cooperative is now named MUFACO. Members involved directly will be paid for their time and effort but all Co-operative members would have a say in how things were managed and would benefit financially in the form of shared dividends. The sewing machines will be based in a shop near the new main market.
The Executive Secretary Vital Ruzagiriza, and the District Economic Advisor, Jean Claude gave short speeches to Cooperative members attending the meeting. They wished them good luck and their ongoing support.
NOUSPR will assist with business training, advice on how to achieve the best start for a fledging business, and how to avoid some of the common pitfalls! We will also be there to help with record keeping and to monitor their accounts. To get the group going NOUSPR will fund two Singer sewing machines and give financial assistance with training and other start-up costs.
